Ok Recruiters! let's cut through the swathes of BS surrounding AI

Recruiters, let’s have some real talk about AI

The internet is on fire with AI hype.

Every day there’s a new post about how recruiters are doooooomed, how AI will replace half of us by next Thursday.

Honestly? Most of it is guff.

And if you’ve actually worked in Talent Acquisition, remember the core of the work you do and the value you add, you’ll know why.

Let’s cut through the bullshit.

The Standard AI Hype

“AI will replace recruiters”

No, it won’t.

Unless, of course, your job is 100% sending cold LinkedIn messages and moving candidates around in an ATS.

AI can’t have a difficult conversation with a hiring manager who refuses to fill in feedback.

AI can’t coach a stakeholder who is interviewing based on a a cool TikTok they saw of Simon Sinek.

AI can’t spot a subtle signal in a conversation that tells you a candidate isn’t actually serious.

Real recruitment entails, judgement and nuance.

“AI will make recruiters insanely productive overnight”

Sorry, also no....

It might help. But only if your foundation is already strong.

Here’s a real example from a company I advised in 2024:

I worked with a team where recruiters were hyped for Ashby’s automated scheduling feature.

I asked why.

They said, “Because half our hiring managers don’t show up to interviews or give feedback.”

No scheduling tool, no AI, no automation is going to fix a broken culture of accountability.

Tools are multipliers. If your foundation is bad, they just multiply the chaos.

Here’s What Recruiters Should Actually Do About AI

Use AI for What It’s Good At

If you’re waiting for your company to give you permission to use AI, you’re already behind.

Get hands-on now. Tinker. Experiment. Make it your tool, not your threat.

Double Down on What AI Can’t Replace

Buy a book on communication. Study change management.

Start treating every stakeholder meeting like a project you lead, not a slot in your calendar.

The more human skills you master, the more AI-proof you become.

Push the Technical Envelope

You don’t have to be a coder.

But you can be someone who builds internal solutions.

The barrier to building technical solutions is basically zero now.

Get curious. Do some cool shit. It's valuable and fun. double win.

Remember: We’re in the Peak AI Hype Phase

Right now, every VC is throwing money at every AI startup they can find. AI funding has recently overtaken all other SaaS funding combined. thats huge...

That won’t last.

Just like the dot-com boom, there will be a consolidation, and a handful of serious players left standing.

You don’t need to panic. You just need to be adaptable.

So, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love SkyNet....

Use AI as a tool, not a crutch.

Strengthen the skills AI can’t touch.

Build better processes.

Stay calm. Stay curious. Do cool shit.
